Why Reset Kobo E-Reader

There are many reasons why you may need to reset your Kobo E-Reader.  The problems include, but are not limited to:

  • Kobo eReader not responding
  • Kobo eReader Errors
  • Kobo eReader not charging
  • Kobo eReader not behaving as expected

Kobo eReaders Covered

The reset procedures here cover all models of Kobo eReaders, including:

  • Kobo eReader
  • Kobo Touch
  • Kobo Mini
  • Kobo Glo
  • Kobo Aura
  • Kobo Aura HD

If your Kobo eReader stops responding or is otherwise experiencing a problem, a reset will correct the issue in almost all cases.  There are two types of resets: A soft reset, which simply restarts the Kobo eReader and does not erase any information, and a hard reset (factory reset), which completely resets the Kobo eReader and returns it to factory condition.  This means that if you do a hard reset of your Kobo eReader, it will be cause it to be in the state it was when you first purchased it.  In this case, it will erase all data on the device, but you will not lose your purchases – they will resynchronize when you go through the setup again.

Charge Your Kobo eReader

If your Kobo eReader is not responding, the first thing you should do is insure that it is charged.  To do this, first try charging it with the included charger.  If that doesn’t work, try charging it from the USB port of a computer.  This may work if you are charging it after a long period of non-use.  The reason is that if the battery is completely discharged, the smart charger may not be able to see the battery and will not begin charging.  However, a computer will continuously allow a small current to the battery and trickle charge the battery enough so it can be recognized.  This doesn’t always work, but it’s worth trying.

Solution – Soft Reset

Soft Reset #1

Press the Home button.  This may be enough to bring your Kobo (if it has a home button) back to life and bring it to the home screen.  This is something you have probably already tried.

Soft Reset #2

Hold the Power Switch to off for 15 seconds.  This will force your Kobo eReader to power off completely.  Once it does, you can slide the power switch again to turn it on.  When you slide the switch on, do it as you normally would to power on your eReader.  Just hold it until the light near the power switch illuminates, and then release.  If this works, your Kobo eReader should be functioning again when it powers up.

Soft Reset #3

Press the reset button briefly.  For the location of the reset button on your model Kobo eReader, see the list below.

Kobo eReader Reset Button Location – All Models

  • Kobo Aura – Bottom edge of the device.
  • Kobo Aura HD – Bottom edge of the device.
  • Kobo eReader – Lower section on back of the device.
  • Kobo Glo – Bottom edge to the left of the USB port.
  • Kobo Mini – Under the back cover on the back of the device.
  • You will need to remove the back cover by gently prying the cover off using the corner slot near the power switch.
  • Kobo Touch – Lower section of back of device.

Unfold a paperclip or similar object and slide it straight into the reset hole.  It should be met with resistance almost immediately.  Press it gently until you feel a slight click and then release. If you have done this correctly, your Kobo eReader will restart.  Be very careful not to insert the object and miss the button.  Doing so could cause damage to the eReader.

Solution – Factory Reset
