Why Reset a Garmin GPS?

If your Garmin GPS freezes, will not lock onto satellites, doesn’t show your correct position, or otherwise behaves in an unexpected way, you should reset the device.  A Garmin GPS reset will correct all but the most serious problems (those that require service).

Garmin GPS Hard Reset vs Garmin GPS Soft Reset

A hard reset of any device usually erases all user information on that device and resets it back to the way it was when it was new out of the box. It doesn’t erase software and firmware require to start and use the device since that has to remain in order for the device to start up and allow you to configure it.

A soft reset usually leaves information where it is and simply insures that the device has completely restarted. Most devices today have batteries of some kind in them – either to run the GPS when not plugged in or at least to retain the user information when it’s turned off and unplugged. For this reason, we rarely do a full restart on a device, even when we think we have. Usually, we are just putting the device to sleep. A soft reset is the equivalent of pulling the battery out of a device, and putting it back in which, on most GPS devices, is not possible without taking the GPS apart. A soft reset does this for us.

More information on this will be coming soon.  Check back for updates, or subscribe to the blog to receive updates through email.
